In comparison, a quality flooded lead-acid battery costs around $300-340 per usable kWh, and a quality AGM battery falls in the range of $450-670 per usable kWh and the cost continues to go up and up as lead commodity prices increase. These cost/kWh are reasonable examples, in some cases cost may be less and in some cases more, these values are simple observations concerning unit cost compared to usable energy based on the note above. Considering the lifespan, an AGM battery typically lasts about 3-5 years with heavy usage, a flooded lead acid battery may be slightly longer, while a lithium battery can easily last 10 years or more with heavy usage. This difference in longevity is crucial. Over 10 years, you may need to replace lead acid batteries 2-3 times, effectively doubling or tripling the evaluated cost. Therefore, the total cost for lead acid batteries will easily exceed that of lithium batteries if it doesn’t already do so upfront.
