Solar 101 - Understanding Solar Energy: What It Is, How It Works, and Why It Matters
At NAZ Solar Electric, we believe everyone should feel empowered to understand and explore solar energy. Whether you’re just starting out or simply curious, this article breaks down the basics: what solar energy is, how it works, and why it’s a powerful solution for our future.
Watch our Solar 101 video to get an easy overview, or read more below to dig a little deeper.
What Is Solar Energy?
Solar energy is the power we get from the sun. Every day, the Earth receives a mind-blowing 173,000 terawatts of solar power—over 10,000 times more energy than the entire world uses! This abundant resource is not only free, but also clean, renewable, and available to everyone.
How Do Solar Panels Work?
Solar panels, also known as photovoltaic (PV) panels, are the tools we use to harness sunlight and turn it into electricity. Each panel is made up of many small solar cells—most commonly made from silicon, a plentiful and highly effective material for capturing solar energy.
The Science Behind Solar Power
Here’s a simple breakdown of how solar panels generate electricity:
- Sunlight Hits the PanelLight from the sun contains tiny particles called photons. When these photons strike a solar cell, they knock electrons loose from atoms in the silicon layers.
- An Electric Field Is CreatedSolar cells are made with two layers of silicon—one with extra electrons, and another with “holes” (spaces where electrons can go). This setup creates an electric field that drives the freed electrons in a specific direction.
- Electricity Flows Through the CircuitAs electrons move, they generate a direct current (DC) of electricity. This current can be used immediately, stored in batteries, or converted into alternating current (AC) using an inverter—so it’s ready to power your home.
- Minimal Maintenance, Long-Term UseSince the only thing that moves in a solar cell is electrons, there are no mechanical parts to wear out. That means solar panels are durable and can keep producing power for decades with minimal upkeep.
1. It’s Clean and Renewable
Unlike fossil fuels, solar energy doesn’t release harmful emissions. It reduces our dependence on polluting energy sources and helps fight climate change by cutting carbon emissions.
2. It Saves You Money
After the upfront cost of installation, solar panels can drastically reduce your electricity bills. In many cases, homeowners can even sell excess energy back to the grid and receive credits or payments through net metering.
3. It’s Getting Better All the Time
While storage and transmission of solar energy still have room for improvement, current solar technology is already powerful enough to meet global energy demands. The future is bright—especially as battery systems and smart inverters continue to evolve.
Is Solar Right for You?
Solar energy isn’t just for tech enthusiasts or early adopters. It’s for anyone who wants to save money, reduce their carbon footprint, and invest in a cleaner future. Whether you’re powering a home, cabin, or off-grid system, solar offers practical, sustainable energy independence.
