NOTE: The Outback VFXR2812A inverter is not grid-interactive. It is intended for off-grid use.

With the new Outback Power FX-R Renewable Hybrid inverters, you're no longer locked down into only a single type of electrical system. Traditionally, most inverters are designed to work as either off-grid or grid-interactive power systems. Outback has changed the rules and developed a single inverter that's capable of both. Besides the extra features and versatility, some people may wonder if they need an inverter that can do both. As an example, let's say you're in a rural part of the country and you can only install an off-grid solar power system. However, the local utility company plans on connecting your property to the electrical grid within a few years. With a new hybrid inverter, you can run your system off the grid for years, and then easily switch your system over to grid-interactive once the utility company has connected your service. This will save you thousands of dollars in equipment and labor to upgrade your house to a grid-tie system. All you have to do is simply reprogram the inverter for grid-tie connectivity. Another example of why you may want to consider a hybrid inverter is if you install a grid-interactive system but then you want to go off the grid at some point in the future. If the electrical company keeps raising your rates, you will have the option of taking your system off the grid. Having the option to easily go off-grid is a great way to stay one step ahead of your utility company.

In addition to all the greatest features of the Outback VFX series inverters, the VFX-R series boasts some of the best new features available on this class of inverters. This includes GridZero technology, advanced battery charging, seven programmable operation modes, and remote monitoring and control with OPTICS RE via MATE 3. The vented VFX-R models are available in 2,800 watts, 3,500 watts, and 3,600 watts, and 12 to 48 volts DC. The modular and stackable design allows up to 10 inverters to be connected in a grid-tie system.

An Insanely Robust, Sturdy, and Utterly Reliable Pure Sine Wave Inverter for Use in Ultra-High-Reliability Power Systems! Review by Vinny

This is an amazing, incredibly robust and reliable, and nearly-bulletproof (in terms of reliability and uptime), nominal 12 volt DC to nominal 120 VAC pure sine wave power inverter. After having spent a lot of time in due diligence research to find the most robust and reliable pure sine wave power inverter available on the market for use as a replacement/upgrade for the inverter in my 12 volt nominal off-grid solar-assisted 85 kW (storage capacity) battery backup AC power system, I settled on this model, and I purchased one in mid-2016 from Solar Electric, aka Northern Arizona Wind and Sun.

I purchased this Outback inverter to replace a high-end Samlex 2 kW pure since wave inverter that had worked fairly well in the above-described off-grid battery backup system for the previous few years, but which had always exhibited several serious limitations, including poor surge power handling capabilities, and an inability to handle input DC voltages of over 15.35 VDC (incidentally, the Outback VFXR2812A inverter excels in that department, and it can handle DC input voltages of up to 17 VDC).

BTW, when I ordered my Outback Power VFXR2812A 2800W Inverter, I purposely did NOT order the optional Outback accessory called the MATE (currently called MATE3) System Display and Controller Interface. The reason that I chose not to order the MATE (aka MATE 3) Controller was simply because I knew that I would not need it for my particular setup, since my system did not require any custom programming of the Outback inverter, nor would it ever require any of the special features or options in this inverter that are available only via the MATE / MATE3 controller/display. Looking back, I made the right decision in not ordering the MATE controller, as the initial setup of the VFXR2812A inverter went quickly and smoothly, and I have, in the interim period since I first set it up over a year ago, never had even the slightest need for any of the special customized options or features available in the inverter only through the use of the MATE controller/display.

In Closing
Now, by this point, after having read my glowing review above, you may have asked: What exactly are my technical credentials for having written this review, aside from the fact that I have had my VFXR2812A inverter in full-time always-on 24/7 service for 18 months? Well, I am a multi-disciplinary consulting and research scientist and engineer (electrical/electronics engineering) with a graduate degree in the sciences, and I also have a number of years of experience in managing IS/IT teams in the corporate world and in the small business world, and I have also designed and prototyped off-grid emergency power solar-assisted battery backup systems in the 100 kW to 600 kW storage capacity range across the years for various commercial ventures and non-profit research organizations.

In Closing, My Final Verdict on the VFXR2812A Inverter
Across the past 8 years, since about early 2009, I have owned and employed in my off-grid battery backup power system a very wide range of higher-end 12 volt nominal pure sine wave inverters with an output power of 1,800 watts (1.8kW) or greater, I can say without a doubt that this Outback Power VFXR2812A inverter is by far the most reliable, robust, sturdy, forgiving, tolerant, and nearly fail-safe pure sine wave power inverter that I have ever encountered. It has, in the 18 months that I have owned it, fully lived up to the very high expectations for robustness, reliability and uptime that I had for it based upon the extensive due diligence research that I had performed prior to selecting this inverter for purchase. Use this inverter on a 40' fifth wheel, connect the batteries, connect the generator start, connect the ac bus and just use, maintain the deep cycle batteries are my hardest task (Posted on October 18, 2017)
