Sunny Boy Transformerless 5,000 Watt Grid-Tie Inverter

This model has been discontinued and replaced with the Sunny Boy 5.0-US.

If you're looking for one of the most efficient grid-tie inverters on the market, look no further than the SMA Sunny Boy transformerless (TL) series. Their innovative design not only increases the inverter's efficiency, but it also substantially decreases the overall weight. The TL inverters incorporate an advanced MPPT technology for maximizing power and energy yield, while reducing the overall effect of shade on the solar array. The wide voltage input range, from 125 volts to 500 volts DC, allows the inverter to be used on solar arrays of multiple different configurations.

This TL model also comes with a new feature called Secure Power Supply (SPS). Most grid-tie inverters will not produce power if the utility grid goes down. This is a safety feature that prevents solar systems from energizing the grid while the utility company is working on the power lines or other equipment. However, the SPS feature is designed to provide a total 1,500 watts of power to a dedicated electrical receptacle. This means that if your utility grid electrical service goes down, the Sunny Boy TL will still provide power to one circuit. This can be used to power emergency loads, charge phones, radios, small refrigerator or computers, etc. This of course depends on whether or not the sun is shining.

When you purchase this SMA inverter, you will have access to free system monitoring via the Sunny Portal website. You will be able to monitor your solar system from anywhere in the world (NOTE: In order to take advantage of the Sunny Portal website and monitor your system, you will need the Sunny Webbox and the appropriate communications accessories). The front panel of the inverter also has a graphic display panel for programming the unit and monitoring your system status.

The NEMA 3R enclosure is weatherproof and allows you to mount the unit in areas that are exposed to the elements. We do not recommend installing the inverter in a location that gets direct sunlight so that the unit does not get too hot. It's preferable if you can mount it in a location with some cover from the rain and direct sun light. The inverter conforms to all required UL standards 1741 and 1699B. The built-in arc-fault circuit interrupt (AFCI) makes the inverter in compliance with the national electric code (NEC) section 690.11 which protects against fire hazards.
